The Substance of Capital by Robert Kurz

Originally published in two parts in issues 1 and 2 of the theoretical journal Exit! In this text Kurz attempts to renew Marx’s radical critique of political economy. The first part deals with the problem of labour, notably criticising Marx’s own aporetic reasoning. The second part is concerned with the propensity of capitalism to breakdown under it’s own internal contradictions. Recognised as a significant contribution to the understanding of value critique (wertkritik), since the publication of Robin Halpin’s English translation in book form, subsequent editions have appeared in French and Spanish and it continues to provoke much debate.

No Revolution Anywhere by Robert Kurz

Includes an interview and essays by Kurz translated from French and German. The interview serves to clarify a number of key ideas in Kurz’s critique of modern capitalism and how it may be overcome. The title essay is a critical reflection on the widespread social unrest of 2011, namely the Arab Spring, anti-austerity movements in Europe and elsewhere, rioting in the UK and ‘Occupy the USA’. The collection is completed by Beneath Contempt, an essay on war, capitalism and the Left’s response from 1999, but sadly still topical.

Anti-Semitism and National Socialism by Moishe Postone

In this groundbreaking and influential essay Postone argues that modern anti-Semitism involves a “biologization of capitalism” in which the abstract domination of capital is attributed to an international Jewish conspiracy. This reactionary, fetishised form of anti-capitalism is central to National Socialism, where it is expressed in the racial opposition of the Aryans and the Jews and finds its’ logical end point in Auschwitz.

The Veritable Split in the International: Public Circular of the Situationist International

The S.I.’s final publication was a diversion (détournement, if you really must) of the First International’s Alleged Split in the International from 1872. As this constitutes an intrinsic feature of the book, our English edition is a facsimile of the original from 1972. Includes Guy Debord’s scathing Theses on the Situationist International and its Time and supporting documents.

Preface to the Fourth Italian Edition of ‘The Society of the Spectacle’ by Guy Debord

Amongst other things Debord reflects on the strategic aims behind the writing of the Society of the Spectacle, its reception and enduring significance; the kidnapping and assassination of Aldo Moro; and the crisis of spectacular domination: “The days of this society are numbered; its reasons and merits have been weighed in the balance and found wanting; its inhabitants are divided into two parties, one of which wants this society to disappear.”
